If you’re already set up for natural gas and considering this clean-burning fuel as a source of heat for your pool, you’re in good company. Natural gas pool heaters remain popular for a number of reasons, especially where natural gas is readily available for homeowners in the U.S. Learn more about these efficient and effective pool heaters below.

How does a natural gas pool heater work?

The process is relatively simple and begins when your pool heater’s thermostat detects water temperatures below your desired range. When that happens, your heater will begin burning gas in a combustion chamber. The heat from this process is then transferred to a set of coils or tubes called a heat exchanger. Pool water is then pumped through this heat exchanger, where it absorbs warmth and is pumped back into your pool. Gasses created during the burning process are vented out through a flue or chimney. When the water in your pool reaches the desired temperature set on your thermostat, the heater shuts off.

What are the benefits of natural gas pool heaters?

Compared to their electric counterparts—like electric heat pumps—natural gas pool heaters offer several advantages:

  • Natural gas pool heaters are typically less expensive to purchase and install
  • Depending on how much natural gas costs in your area, they’re often less expensive to operate, especially when cooler temperatures tend to reduce the efficiency of the average electric heater
  • Natural gas heaters take up less space, as many come in a compact design
  • Gas heaters heat water quicker and can bring your pool to the desired temperature in just a few hours

Additional advantages include greater precision and control over your pool’s temperature, reliability, durability and the fact that they allow you to heat your pool when you choose, versus some electric pool heaters that run constantly.

What’s the best natural gas pool heater?

There are several factors to consider when selecting a natural gas pool heater. Price, efficiency, durability, user features, environmental impact and the size of your pool are all things to keep in mind. Prices tend to vary between $2,000 and $5,000, depending on your particular needs. Here are a few highly recommended models:

Raypak 406,000 BTU Digital Natural Gas Pool Heater ($5,251): Designed to withstand harsh conditions, this model is noted for durability and high efficiency—83% efficiency rating. It’s quiet, easy to control and provides self-diagnosis when problems arise.

Hayward Universal H-Series 400,000 BTU Heater ($3,999): Noted for low emissions, this model features an electronic ignition system and a robust heat exchanger with powerful output—great for heating larger pools.

Pentair MasterTemp 400K BTU ($4,199): Compact, efficient and environmentally friendly, this model features an easy-to-use digital display and safety features that prevent your pool water from ever overheating.

Additional Costs:

Keep in mind that the cost of installation will be an expense added to the cost of the heater itself, and that can vary based on the type of heater you choose, permits and the general cost of this type of labor in your area. On the lower end, you can expect to pay $2,000 to $3,500 for installation. Higher-end estimates range up to about $7,000. You’ll also have additional costs if your home isn’t already set up for natural gas service—see more about that in our helpful blog: How do I get natural gas?

How do I install a natural gas pool heater?

Unless you have specialized training, it’s not recommended that you install a natural gas pool heater yourself. You’ll want to choose a licensed professional who knows exactly where and how the heater should be installed and if there are any permitting or code requirements for your area. Proper venting must be accounted for, as well as electrical work and making sure all plumbing and gas line connections are done properly. A technician will also know how to perform safety tests.

When choosing a pro to handle your installation, ask for referrals from friends and family who live in your area. Check online reviews or talk to your local pool supply store—they can often recommend reputable professionals. Be sure to get several recommendations, if possible, as it’s a good idea to get more than one quote for the work you need done.

You’ll want to make sure the professionals you choose have specific experience with natural gas pool heaters, that they’re certified and insured. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. Will your contractor handle any permits that are needed? How long will the installation take? Does their work come with a warranty? Do they offer maintenance services? Do you understand everything in their contact, and do they have a payment schedule that keeps you from paying the full amount up front? Contractors usually require 10% to 30% to get started. If you’re asked to make full payment at the start, that’s a red flag. Consider choosing another licensed professional.
