Gas South Partner Spotlight: Ser Familia

Each month throughout the last year, we’ve been spotlighting some of the charitable groups we partner with. We call these nonprofits our Fuel For Good Allies, as each aligns with our purpose to give back 5% of profits each year to help support children in need in the communities we serve—it’s one of the ways we’re striving to Be A Fuel For Good®. Because half of September celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct.15), we thought it would be the perfect time with this week’s blog to highlight our partnership with Ser Familia.

Serving the Atlanta Metro Area since 2001, Ser Familia strives to offer preventative family services to local Latinos in need of the tools, resources and skills required to move from crisis to a state of thriving. We’re proud of our long partnership with Ser Familia and that they were one of our 10 charitable recipients last year to share in a $3.7-million Gas South donation.

Recently, we caught up with Ser Familia Chief Executive Officer Belisa M. Urbina to get her perspective on our partnership and this important time of year.

“Support from companies like Gas South is crucial for our mission to enhance mental health services within the Hispanic community in Atlanta,” Urbina said. “Such partnerships provide more than just financial assistance. They signal a commitment to social responsibility and a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by underserved communities.”

And all of that support is especially relevant this time of year, she said.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a vital time for everyone to pause and celebrate the significant contributions and achievements of Hispanics in shaping the history and culture of the United States,” Urbina said. “It highlights the essential role that Hispanic communities play in our nation's fabric. This month also offers a chance to reflect on the ongoing challenges faced by Hispanic families and communities. For those who are not part of the Hispanic community, it's an opportunity to deepen your understanding and consider how you can contribute to the ongoing work toward equality.”

Urbina said Gas South’s partnership will help Ser Familia expand their outreach, improve programs and help ensure culturally sensitive mental health resources are accessible and relevant. Such partnerships also help build a more inclusive and resilient network and help destigmatize the topic of mental health, she said, so it becomes a conversation we can all take part in.

“Partnering with Gas South has been an incredibly positive experience,” Urbina said. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to work together and look forward to continuing this valuable partnership to further our shared mission of improving mental health outcomes in the community.”

Thanks for reading our blog this week. We hope each of you has a happy Hispanic Heritage Month 2024. Stay tuned to our blog and social posts as we continue to highlight our charitable partners in the future.
